About the Rwanda Genocide

The Rwandan Genocide was the systematic murder of the Tutsi minority of Rwanda and the moderates of its Hutu majority, in 1994. This was both the bloodiest period of the Rwandan Civil War and one of the worst genocides of the 1990s. With the preliminary implementation of the Arusha Accords, the Tutsi rebels and Hutu regime were able to agree to a cease-fire, and further negotiations were underway. The diplomatic efforts to end the conflict were at first thought to be successful, yet even with the RPF (political wing of the RPA) and Hutu officials in talks, certain Hutu factions, like the Akazu, were against any agreement for cooperation between the regime, and the rebels; to end Rwanda's ethnic and economic troubles and progress towards a stable nationhood. The genocide was primarily the action of two statutory Hutu militias, the Interahamwe (military wing of the MRND) and the Impuzamugambi (military wing of the CDR), against dissenters to their culture of Hutu power. Over the course of about 100 days, from April 6 to mid-July, at least 500,000 Tutsis and thousands of Hutus were killed during the genocide. Some estimates put the death toll around the 800,000 and 1,000,000 marks. With the genocide, and the resurgence in the civil war, Rwanda's conflict was thought by the United Nations to be too difficult and volatile for it to handle. Eventually, the Tutsi rebels successfully brought the country under their control and overthrew the Hutu regime. Hundreds of thousands of Hutu refugees fled across the borders, mainly west to Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). The presence of the extreme Hutu factions on the border with Rwanda was the cause for the First and Second Congo Wars, with clashes between these groups and the RPF's RPA, now part of a coalition force, even until today.Hutu and Tutsi rivarly was also central to the Burundian Civil War.The UN's neglect of the Rwandan Genocide, under comprehensive media coverage, drew severe criticism. France, Belgium, and the United States in particular, received negative attention for their complacency towards the extreme Hutu regime's oppressions. Canada, Ghana, and the Netherlands, did continue to provide a force on the ground, under the command of Roméo Dallaire of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR), but this mission had little actual power without support from the UN Security Council. Despite specific demands from UNAMIR's commanders in Rwanda, before and throughout the genocide, its requests for authorization to intervene were refused, and its capacity was even reduced.

The Hero in the Rwanda Genocide

Paul Rusesabagina (born June 15, 1954) is a Rwandan who has been internationally honoured for saving 1,268 civilians during the Rwandan Genocide. He was the assistant manager of the Sabena Hôtel des Mille Collines before he became the manager of the Hôtel des Diplomates, both in Kigali Rwanda. During the 1994 Rwandan genocide Rusesabagina used his influence and connections as temporary manager of the 'Mille Collines' to shelter 1,268 Tutsis and moderate Hutus from being slaughtered by the Interahamwe militia. His story was the basis of the Academy Award nominated film Hotel Rwanda (2004). He currently lives in Belgium with his wife, children, and two adopted nieces. He drove a taxi in Brussels and after three years opened a trucking company.

After watching Hotel Rwanda

To most people in Taiwan, genocide and massacre are just some kinds of vocabularies that we can hear from CNN or BBC. However, to people who live in Africa, those words are not merely idioms but death.

Terry George, a famous director, produce this movie which is based on a true story, “Hotel Rwanda”, to remind the audience around the world that something cruel is indeed existed on this planet. And, the most reason to cause such kind of tragedies might be the ignorance of people all over the world. In the movie, when Paul thought that the news the reporters cast might help the whole world know that Rwanda needed help, the reporter just said that people would feel terrible but keep eating their meal without any actions. At that moment, the director indicated the truth without any covers. What happened in Rwanda is just nothing to them. First, there is no resource. Second, helping this Africans is not benefited. The lines which were spoke from the actors are just like knifes and swords cutting and penetrating the audiences again and again. It hurts but we cannot deny it.

Meanwhile, greed, is another point that the director use to make the audience to receive the whole concept of the movie. The western powers protected the hotel for their reputation to maintain their enterprise. The Hutu general help Paul for the bribe. Without advantages and bribes, there would not be helps and hopes anymore. It sounds quite cruel, but it is quite real that you can hardly face it. We might blame those people and scold them, but we have to understand we are also the ones who did nothing to help them.

In “Hotel Rwanda”, the director did not use the bloody and cruel scenes to express how the genocide happened. Instead of that, he use the fear of actors. In other word, the atmosphere is the real notion that T. George wanted to show. Expressions of the actors convey the fear of them. The close-up is so impressive that I can hardly forget the feeling when I watch this movie. Every take of each face make me even believe that they were indeed in the tragedy of human history, not acting in a movie.

Undoubtedly, this is a terrific movie. In the aspect of dealing the race issue, “Hotel Rwanda” can be taken as a masterpiece. Besides, the music, the actors and the production and direction are quite excellent. It is success not only because it is a good movie but also it make us know what we should understand.
